SSE China Securities News (Reporter Song Weiping) On December 22, the world's first 35 kV km superconducting cable demonstration project built by the State Grid Corporation in Shanghai was officially put into operation. This is a major core technology breakthrough in the construction of new domestic power systems, marking China's superconducting power transmission applications into the global ranks.

The 35 kV km-level superconducting cable demonstration project is located in Xuhui commercial core area, linking two 220 kV substations, with a total length of 1.2 km, rated current of 2200 amperes, rated capacity of 133 MVA, using the whole row of pipe laying process, is currently the world's longest distance, the largest transmission capacity, full commercial operation of 35 kV superconducting cable transmission project.

As one of the achievements of the strategic cooperation in science and technology industry jointly carried out by State Grid and Shanghai Municipality, the demonstration project is constructed and maintained by State Grid Shanghai Electric Power, and the project has taken more than five years from the start of the conception to the full line operation in 2016; the main part of the project started in April 2020 and took one and a half years to complete.

Superconducting power transmission is one of the most revolutionary and cutting-edge technologies in the power industry today. Its principle is to use the superconducting properties of superconducting materials in the liquid nitrogen environment at minus 196 degrees Celsius to make the power transmission medium close to zero resistance and the power transmission loss close to zero, thus realizing high-capacity power transmission at low voltage levels.
